Your "default" freebsd 7.1 installation actually uses a non-default
partition layout.

You create two partitions / and /home with / being only 3gb.
All applications are usually installed to /usr.

The result is when setting up my server it runs out of inodes before
all the apps are installed, leaving the system useless.

Yes I can fix it by doing a reinstall and set the correct partitions
using custom partitions, but the "default" freebsd server you get when
you signup is effectively useless.
