next time try it this way, this should do the trick
Press Alt-F2 to open your ‘Run Command’ panel at the top of the screen or otherwise, simply open a terminal.
Then type the following command:
update-manager -d
Your system will open an update manager window. You then have to, check for and install any available updates and then check for any more available updates. The update manager will notify you, at the top of the window, that a distribution upgrade is available. Click ‘upgrade’ and follow the steps to upgrading your system to Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 1.
